For immediate release:
The fifth year in the gallery’s journey brings seriousness and excitement. We remain open and unpredictable in our practice. Individual, and collective, achievement informs our gallery by recognizing the outsider within.
RKG continues the dialogue, worth attention to local artists and beyond. Exhibiting at our gallery for the first time, at centre stage is sculptor Francesco Albano. Francesco’s interests and influences are a wide range of subjects from philosophical, mystical and spiritual arguments to scientific theories, from psychological studies to real life stories. Albano uses skin and bone as a tool of expression of societal pressures and psychological violence on the body and conscience.
Bruce Eves: “Even though it is virtually indefinable, this much I know for certain: necks are meant for sticking out, envelopes are meant for pushing; art is not suitable for family viewing nor must it be emotionally uplifting; art must refuse to kowtow to the limitless demands for the familiar and the safe and the conventional and the decorative; art has nothing to do with social work or political stability or with the ending of negative stereotypes – these are the jobs for propagandists.” After fully moving to digital media in 2000, Eves has established a presence internationally through his participation in New Media events and festivals in Argentina, Brazil, Britain, Canada, Cuba, Germany, India, the Netherlands, Spain, Thailand, and Venezuela. In 2001 he returned to Canada after living abroad for many years. Bruce Eves is a Toronto-based artist.
Bronze and cast iron sculptures by Michael Davey are a strong presence at RKG anniversary. Davey is a sculptor and installation artist whose work often includes cast materials and found objects. Much of his art practice, including bronze and aluminum castings and drawing, takes place at or near his home on Toronto Island, Ontario, Canada. Michael Davey is also a curator and associate professor in the Visual Arts department at York University.
Unconventional, ever omnipresent interventions of Oscar Figueroa neighbour seamlessly with Francesco's sculptures. Randall Okita's disturbing fireproof suit, also drawing painterly of Silvia Argiolas and Silvia Mei. Notable is the presence of Nicole Clouston’s installation sculpture.
After, or before, one experiences all content of exhibition, will be introdused to conteplative Torsten Richter's drawing, serves as a mark of otherly dimention within reality of the gallery experience.
Featuring a month-long residency project by Raul Altosaar and Marvin Luvualu Antonio, "Every Day Is A Lifetime". We are excited by this inspiring duo artists. Exploring within practical and philosophical terms day-to-day situations, mediums, staging life-moment of the month. Video is focal medium to this collaboration. Objects, and performance as personal interaction in essence turn the outdoor gallery’s long wall into a nested life situation, by transforming it to an amazing outdoor performing working station. Rooftop and mural of RKG’s north wall become a backdrop of celebration.
